LH Appreciates its Volunteers

                                                                    A Celebration of Volunteerism

     On Saturday, March 28th, Lending Hands of Michigan celebrated volunteerism by holding its 7th Annual Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast. The event was held at the Portage Senior Center. Over 50 Lending Hands volunteers and family members were in attendance at the breakfast. The theme of this year’s event was Lending Hands volunteers are as Good as Gold. Opening remarks and introduction of guests was given by Board Chair, David Smith. Among those in attendance were Portage Mayor, Peter Strazdas, along with Portage Council members, Nasim Ansari and Patricia Randall.

     Lending Hands Treasurer, Paul Hartwigsen gave remarks in remembering Lending Hands volunteers who have passed away including, Lynn Rothlisberger, Darrell Demarest and David Salik. A special time at the breakfast was the celebration of volunteerism of Lending Hands volunteers made by Board Member, Julie VanderNoot. She introduced those volunteers who have given five years or more of service to the organization. Of special note were three volunteers who have given more than nine years of service, Magnolia Bodley, Carolyn Tourangeau and Tom Harkness. Two special guests, Cathy Gleason, an occupational therapist and Kevin Conway, a Lending Hands client and donor, made brief comments on how they feel Lending Hands has helped them and the impact the organization has on many lives.

     Board member, Don Ryan gave a talk on “Worth Your Weight in Gold”. He pointed out the big value Lending Hands volunteers have to the organization by the thousands of hours of service they give. Further Ryan said Lending Hands is a small but mighty all volunteer organization with only one paid staff person. At the end of the event, Portage Mayor, Peter Strazdas, made a few comments. The mayor commented that these volunteers make me feel humble for the work they do. Further he stated volunteers are the ones changing the world. Finally he said this small non-profit organization is having a big impact in the City of Portage and surrounding communities.

     The appreciation event was organized and put together by the Lending Hands Board of Directors with Board Vice-Chair, Kimberly Middleton leading the event. Sponsorship of the event was provided by Continental Linen Supply, Jaqua Realtors, Life-EMS Ambulance, Rykse’s Restaurant and several Board members.  Special thanks to hospitality given by the Portage Senior Center.
